Stephen P. McGuire was hired in 1975 as the firm's first associate. He previously had been with a Philadelphia public interest law firm, where he worked on high profile cases and co-authored the legal treatise, "Newberg on Class Actions." After three years, he was drawn to West Chester and the opportunities associated with working in a smaller firm.
"I actually had to convince them it would be exciting enough," he said of his interview with the firm's partners. "I enjoy meeting people and helping them resolve their problems. I wanted a smaller law firm where there would be more client contact."
A native of Aurora, New York and the son of a large commercial builder, Steve initially thought he'd become an engineer. But after studying engineering at Villanova University for two years, he changed his major to liberal arts.
"I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do," Steve recalled. "But with a liberal arts degree, I knew I had the choice of moving forward into business or law."
After graduating from Villanova in 1969, Steve went on to George Washington University School of Law where he earned his J.D. in 1972. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1973.
Steve has been a partner with the firm since 1978. A member of the Chester County, Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Bar Associations, his practice areas include Business, Banking and Corporate issues as well as Real Estate, Land Use and Municipal work. After three decades at Buckley Brion, he still enjoys the daily, ongoing intellectual challenge.
"I enjoy learning," he said. "I also enjoy teaching and mentoring the associates. It's important that the younger associates know the elder members of the firm are available to them for insight and assistance."
Steve and his wife, Pat, an art teacher, live in East Bradford and have three daughters. An avid golfer who enjoys participating in local charity events, Steve is also a music lover. His wide-range of musical taste includes jazz, blues, pop and rock.
